Scott Horne, Minneapolis Chair maker
Handcrafted Cherry Wood and Traditional Windsors
Scott Horne, Minneapolis, MN, offers not only rare and beautiful chairs made from 100% American Cherry, but also a variety of traditional favorites with meaningful nuance both sculpturally and regarding finishes (see Chair Gallery).
With a foundation in documented history (Evans,1996), my work in cherrywood has an uncommon allure due to construction from a single, unpainted hardwood, which is a simple fact, but a rare and demanding feat in Windsor chair construction. In contrast, (my) Traditional Windsors are painted and consist of a variety of woods.
Depending on the type of Windsor chosen, I use multiple traditional and modern techniques requiring augers, spoke shaves and drawknives; I undertake riving, steam bending and wood turning; and I submit to specific power tools that I deem efficient.

History
In the 1980’s, I was inspired–first by peasant carpenters in Paraguay, and next, by an assortment of Kentuckians in rural Monroe County–to pursue, and celebrate, the craft of chairmaking.
